The Royal St. John's Regatta embodies the culture, uniqueness and spirit of our City. For two centuries, rowers of all ages have flocked to Quidi Vidi Lake and dedicated themselves to participating in this great event. It is the enduring interest by the participants in this one of a kind sport that enables the continuation of the Regatta tradition.

It is also through the efforts of volunteers that the Royal St. John's Regatta continues to grow and be more successful each year. To all Regatta Committee members, Honourary members, coxswains, coaches, volunteer charities, organizations and supporters, your contributions have not gone unnoticed and are appreciated.

This year, The Royal St. John's Regatta Committee, with the tremendous financial support from eleven new shell sponsors and the City of St. John's, are very proud to introduce new fiberglass shells that will ensure the availability of quality equipment to our rowers for many years to come. We are also proud that, for the first time since the passing of renowned boat builder, Bob Sexton, the creator of the famous 1901 Blue Peter, our shells are being built right here in Newfoundland and Labrador.

On behalf of the Royal St. John's Regatta Committee, I would like to thank our Honourary Patron, The Honourable Edward Roberts, Lieutenant Governor of Newfoundland and Labrador, The Honourable Danny Williams, Premier of Newfoundland and Labrador, Honourary President of the 2006 Regatta, His Worship Mayor Andy Wells, our patrons, our corporate sponsors and the media for their continuing assistance and support.

To all the participants of the 188th running of the Royal St. John's Regatta, I wish you the best of luck this year, and to the citizens of St. John's and all visitors to our event, I wish you a very enjoyable Regatta Day.
