Chevron Learn to Row & Learn To Coxswain

Learn To Row

The Learn to Row (LTR) Program, first introduced in October 2010, affords individuals who have never rowed before the experience of rowing in the same shells used in the historic Royal St. John's Regatta each year. The program is aimed at both first time rowers and those who have rowing experience and want to get back on Quidi Vidi Lake for a "spin".

The Learn to Row Program is open to individuals and crews of any age. There is a spring program (Beginning June 1) and a fall program (early September - to be confirmed). Coxswains and training are provided. There is no fee to join this program!

This year the Royal St. John’s Regatta Committee, in partnership with Chevron Canada Limited, will run the spring Learn to Row Program starting on June 1.

REGISTRATION IS NOW OPEN! Please forward your name, gender/age, address, telephone number and e-mail to boathouse@stjohnsregatta.com, with the Subject Line “Learn to Row 2015 Registration”. Once your e-mail is received, it will be acknowledged, and the Learn to Row coordinator will make contact with you to setup your individual learning plan for 2015 and provide an overview of upcoming public and private information/educational sessions.

The 2015 Learn to Row Program will have a drop-in component (where individuals can drop by the Boathouse during prescribed hours – to be posted weekly – and the Technical Director/Learn to Row Coordinator and/or volunteers will provide you rowing instruction. However, we strongly encourage participants to register in advance to ensure availability of staff and volunteers at all times).

There will NOT be a 9AM-5PM drop-off component to the program this year. Individualized instruction plans will ensure as many people as possible can access the porgram and will provide much greater value to participants. In addition, this way of delivering the program makes it more flexible for all.

Here’s what the program offers to participants:

  • Rowing instruction plans for individuals, groups of two, four and six.
  • Matchmaking services for coxswains and additional crew members if needed.
  • Information sessions (Safety instruction, technical rowing advice, boat orientation, healthy living and physical activity plans/advice, etc.) in both a group and individual setting.
  • On-water training.

For more information, please contact our Technical Director/Learn to Row Coordinator at boathouse@stjohnsregatta.com or 576-8058.

Individuals wishing to volunteer to provide support/assistance to the LTR program are asked to contact Bradley Power, Director of Boathouse and Pond for the Royal St. John’s Regatta Committee, at bradleypower@gmail.com or by calling 709-727-4044.

Learn To Coxswain

Due to the great success of our Learn To Row Program, the Regatta Committee now offers a Learn To Coxswain (LTC) Program. Are you a new crew without a coxswain, grab a friend and get them involved - no experience necessary.

If you are interested please inform the Technical Director or one of the staff at the Boathouse.

The Program includes:

  • Coxswain Course
  • Rowing/Coaching Clinic
  • On water training with our Technical Director and Boathouse Staff
