Paul Campbell
< back

Paul Campbell has served diligently for the Royal St. John's Regatta Committee for 20 years, from 1986 to present. His broad ranging accomplishments over that time culminated with the construction of the new boathouse the funding for which was secured during his two years as President in 1998 and 1999. Paul is now an Honourary Life Member and continues to play an active role with the Regatta Committee.
Paul has served the Committee in a variety of positions. From 1986 - 1996 he was the chair of the Boathouse and Pond, a responsibility he assumed while serving as Director of Operations. From 1996-2001 Paul served as vice president, president and past president. The facilities around the pond, new shells and equipment, rules and course layout have all changed under Paul's involvement and The Royal St. John's Regatta is a far better event for it. He was integral in the construction of a new Marquee warf, a new judge's platform, renovations to the Marquee, and the addition of floating and fixed warfs on the south side of the lake. Always mindful of the tradition of the sport and those participating in it, Paul consulted with knowledgeable committee members and participants, whom he called together at various times, for input on such issues as the practice time booking system, new oar purchases, shell construction and the addition of a fifth lane.
In the 1990's, Paul solicited sponsorship of 3 new shells while also committing $30,000 for a fourth shell. Paul worked with the shell builder through the pricing and construction period of the 1994 and 1999 shells. Paul's relentless pursuit of financing for a new boathouse was made possible with the commitment made by Mayor Andy Wells and the City of St. John's for one third funding of the 1.2 million dollar building in 1999.
Anyone, young or old, experienced rower or novice, who was interested in making the Regatta a better event, had a listener in Paul Campbell. This is hat sets him apart and why he is deserving of the honour of induction into the Regatta Hall of Fame.
