We talk about great crews over the past one hundred and eighty years, none will ever surpass the accomplishments of the H.S.C. crews of 1979 and 1980. They were the First Ladies' rowing crew to win the first Ladies' Championship Race in the history of the Royal St. John's Regatta (new format, ie turning of the buoys), to in the championship Race (Kim Stirling Memorial Trophy) and as a result also rowed the fastest time of the day. The first ladies crew who had the slowest qualifying times of the Ladies' Championship Race, yet went onto win that championship race. They were the working crew to win two consecutive championship races with the fastest times of the day. Finally, they were a novice crew of first time rowers (ie none of the crew had rowed before and the coxwain was a first time coxwain as well). They would not miss practice, even if their coxwain was working or the weather made it impossible to row, but they persisted and their persistence and determination brought them success. In 1979, they had the slowest time of all the winning ladies crews that day; they not only won the championship race but had the fastest time of the day. They returned in 1980 to successfully defend their title again achieving the fastest time of the day thus discounting any believe that they were in fact a "novice" crew.
