John Connors
< back
It would be extremely difficult to gauge the real worth of the contribution that John Connors made to rowing and to the Annual Regatta.
There are few individuals whose lives were so singularly devoted to Sports.
In compiling a record of his participation we find that from his boyhood John Connors was a real contender in almost every type of sporting endeavor.
He was an outstanding athlete in Junior and Senior Football. He played Softball with the famous Wanderers in the 1930's.
He was a member of championship teams in Baseball, playing with : the Wanderers and Holy Cross teams until his retirement in 1947.
He was a member of the Championships Wanderers Basketball Teams through the 1930's
He had his name inscribed on the famous Boyle Trophy with Holy Cross in 1954 and was a member of Tie-cup and City League teams from 1929 to 1934.
In Track and Field he was the AAA champion in the Hammer Throw with a throw of 99 feet 7 inches in 1934.
He was prominent in Inter Club Bowling for many years.
But perhaps John Connors' greatest contribution to the success of The Annual Regatta is the task that attracted little attention and one which was carried out with such efficiency that few except those closely connected with the running of the Races would appreciate.
The Boat House on Regatta Day represents a scene of organized confusion. Getting boats out to the stakes, settling crew and coxswain disputes, arranging speedy repairs and maintenance are things which don't just happen - it takes a strong and decisive Boat House Chairman to tie it all together. The Regatta Committee was fortunate indeed to have John Connors carry out the sometimes thankless task of Boat House Chairman for almost twenty years. The older members of the Regatta Committee will, certainly remember how valuable was the work of John Connors as Chairman and how much he was responsible for the smooth and efficient running of the Annual Regatta for so many years.
I commend the Name of John Connors to the St. John's Regatta Hall of Fame for induction.
